A film by Linda Midgett
In December 2015, a black, female professor at Wheaton College (known as the “Harvard of evangelical schools”) decided to wear a hijab during Advent in solidarity with Muslim women. When Dr. Larycia Hawkins quoted Pope Francis, saying Muslims and Christians “worship the same god,” she said that she and the pope were referring to the shared history Islam and Christianity have in claiming Abraham as a forefather. But Dr. Hawkins’ Facebook post to that effect led to an explosive controversy with alumni and in the larger evangelical community. A national rift exploded. Dr. Hawkins lost her job, even though she had tenure. This is a spellbinding story told with great balance, and Dr. Hawkins’ predicament is unequivocal.
