inventing tomorrow

A film by Laura Nix

USA/87 mins.

In Monterrey, Mexico, Jesus, Jose, and Fernando develop a photocatalytic paint that can absorb some of their city's air pollution in the same manner that trees would. Jared, from Hilo, Hawaii, investigates the spread of arsenic in his community's soil. And in Bangalore, India, 16-year-old Sahithi creates an app to help citizens test contamination levels in water. These teen scientists converge in Los Angeles (along with 1,800 other teen finalists from nearly 80 countries), where they present their projects, and compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), considered the Olympics of high school science fairs. The sheer optimism of this film is heartening, and as you dab your eyes leaving the theater, you are likely to exclaim: “These kids are gonna save us!”
